Week of July 25th-29th

Hello first grade parents!

This will be our first full week of first grade. Monday through Thursday we will dismiss students at 3:15 and Friday we will dismiss students at 1:45.

Here are some things to know for the upcoming week:

  1. Our library day is Tuesday. This week all first grade classes will have their library orientation and next week students will be able to start checking out books.
  2. Homework packets will start going home the week of August 1st. This week we will start sending home the parent communication log. This paper should come to school everyday in your child’s folder.

Here’s what we’re learning in first grade this week:

Math: This week we are starting chapter 1 which will review addition and subtraction to 10 and cover representing and categorizing data in graphs. This week we will be focusing on learning new math centers that will help students build their fluency in adding and subtracting to 10.

Reading: Our story for this week is “School’s First Day of School”. Our comprehension focus for this week is book basics. We will be going over the jobs of authors and illustrators, the parts of a book, and how to take care of a book.

Phonics: In phonics this week we will be reviewing some Kindergarten skills. Our focus for this week will be reading and writing words with the letters a, m, s, t, d. Our sight words for this week are a, the, I, to, and see.

Writing: For writing this week we will be working on drawing and labeling pictures with best guess spelling. Students will work on stretching out words and writing the sounds they hear in each word.
